My Story

In one way or another I’ve managed dual lives in the academic and commercial worlds of education since 1982, the year I started my doctorate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), while helping found a pioneering educational technology company called Tom Snyder Productions. I worked fulltime at Tom Snyder while completing my Ed.D., and I taught the first version of my longtime HGSE design course, now called Impact by Design, in 1990-91. In late 2001 Tom Snyder was acquired by Scholastic. In 2015 that Scholastic group was acquired by HMH. Over that 30-plus year span I created and helped to create scores of award-winning educational software programs - for home and school - a highly-acclaimed animated science TV series that ran on ABC Saturday Morning, some professional learning courses, and more (100+ total products). I also kept teaching and very gradually began migrating more of my time to HGSE, where I am now fully engaged, while also doing consulting with commercial and nonprofit learning organizations.

Working at that intersection of research, theory, and practice has been central to my long career in education. I like the mix of academic and commercial. The publishing world requires that you produce something valuable that can be used at scale. That's a good obligation, but to achieve scalable impact, that obligation needs to have integrity with research and evidence. I remain committed to the goal of positive, scalable, and sustainable social impact.

That commitment is reflected in my courses. In Impact by Design, a foundational course in the Learning Design, Innovation and Technology program, students work on projects of their own choosing, leveraging research and an iterative, agile development process to generate observable impact in education. The course, and names to describe the process (research-based design, design-based research, design-based implementation research, human-centered design, and so on), have evolved over the years. Essentially, we operate at the intersection of research, theory, and practice. Research from a wide range of sources informs and inspires theories of action to drive the scalable changes in behavior that propel wider impact. We rapidly prototype and test those theories in context, feeding the research base and prompting revisions to the theories of action and the innovations. Innovations never work the first time, but we can learn from their early failures. So productive struggle is a big part of the process.

In a course co-designed and co-led by industry veteran Juliette AdamsEvaluating Impact at Scale through the 3 E's, students look at models of social impact in education through the lenses of Equity, Evidence, and Ecosystem. Students interview funders and founders representing for-profit & non-profit and domestic & international organizations to explore how they decide what equity objectives they find worth pursuing and supporting. Students examine how evidence of impact is defined and measured from these varied perspectives and contexts. And we consider how the different ventures leverage, infiltrate, and even seek to restructure the ecosystems they must penetrate, even when those ecosystems may structurally maintain the inequities the venture seeks to overcome. It's a fabulous journey that taps the wonderfully diverse backgrounds of the students, giving them a framework to sort through hype and potential of educational innovation.

I recently began offering product practicums, intensive courses where students address timely learning design challenges from real world "clients". In the first two practicums, students worked with a major U.S. K-12 publisher that targets literacy and math and a non-profit in India that develops SEL skills among low-income students. For the K-12 publisher, we worked to improve how they support English Learners in their digital math program. For the Indian non-profit, we accepted the challenge of monitoring and measuring the multiple dimensions of creative confidence that the organization develops through their art curriculum. Unleashing 40+ hours of 12 amazingly talented students with each practicum produced wins for everyone. The organizations gained valuable insights, frameworks, and models to improve their programs, fed by all those fabulous Harvard resources. The students got first-hand experience solving a real and immediate problem. And upcoming papers will share the knowledge widely. This year's practicums were once again amazing, and I am excited to offer more of them for a wider range of clients going forward. 

Depending on scheduling and other commitments, I also teach studio classes for students with existing projects or products to work on scaling and sustaining impact. These dynamic, hands-on courses always keep impact in the center. It is a pleasure to work with students from around the world committed to making a difference.

Before Harvard, I graduated from Yale and taught high school social studies. I spent 9 years on my local school committee, and I’m involved in a mix of projects that’s constantly changing. I leverage my extensive and diverse background in educational publishing, instructional design, research, and creating social impact in my consulting work through Dockterman Learning LLC.

Lately...

  • Generative AI is an incredibly powerful, yet risky, tool for learning. How should we be preparing learners of all ages to leverage this asset for their own cognitive growth? That's was the question I challenged students to tackle with me during an intensive J-term course. The result was a framework for Cognitive Partnering in the Age of AI. I continue to work with students and colleagues to refine the framework, and we welcome challenges and feedback.
  • My January 2026 product practicums (the courses were highlighted in Ed Magazine) built on last year's successes with a particular focus on AI. In one practicum last year, students created a custom AI tool for analyzing the linguistic characteristics of math word problems to improve accessibility for English Learners while maintaining mathematical rigor (see the working paper below). In another practicum this year, students applied Evidence Centered Design to develop custom, proof-of-concept GPTs for a large commercial publisher to generate tasks for fostering and measuring durable skills in K-12 classrooms. The results were very cool.
  • In 2024 I was honored with the Morningstar Family Teaching Award. In 2025 HGSE students selected me as their faculty speaker for graduation. I shared 3 of the reasons I love to teach. I am humbled, flattered, and grateful for the opportunity to help unleash the potential of current and future educational innovators and leaders from across the globe.
  • Evidence improves the chances of impact. I co-wrote this working paper to outine 3 paradigm shifts to improve the use of evidence across the lifecycle of EdTech programs and other innovations.
  • Different members of the educational ecosystem have different views of what evidence means and matters. I have shared some thoughts and welcome feedback.
